DELAVAN —Word is getting out about alternative rock band Pearl Jam’s effort to keep our students’ bellies full over the weekend.
The Walworth County Sunday newspaper had a story in the Jan. 15 edition about the band’s gift to the Blessings in a Backpack program, which is giving $50,000 to Wileman Elementary School to help provide food for students in need.
The funds were raised at a two-day summertime Pearl Jam concert at Alpine Valley Music Theater outside East Troy.
The money will provide weekend meals to students who qualify for the federal Free and Reduced Lunch Program. At Wileman Elementary, that’s about 240 students or nearly 75 percent of the student body in the 4-year-old kindergarten through fifth grade school. The grant should last about three years.
