Phoenix Middle School Art Teacher Hugh Petersen continues bringing his lessons to more than just the sixth, seventh and eighth graders in his classes.
Petersen had an article published for the 18th time in Arts and Activities magazine, a publication geared toward art teachers and artists of all levels. He began writing periodic articles for the magazine in 1989. (Click here for a related article.)
Petersen wrote about how to create Aztec Suns.
“There is a large population of students from Mexico in my school district,” Petersen wrote. “I wanted to come up with a project that touched on their culture.”
Perhaps outside of the Mexican flag, the Aztec Sun Stone is one of the most famous symbols in the country.
Petersen had his sixth grade students create their own Aztec Suns on both scratch board and by block printing. The article details more on the project. Click the image to read it.
