Delavan-Darien High School winter athletes had a successful first half of the week this week.
The DDHS varsity girls basketball team won by a single point, 45-44, Monday at Stoughton. University of Nevada Las Vegas recruit Alana Cesarz made one of two free throws in the final seconds to lift the Comets to victory. The Comets led 24-18 at the half, but trailed 34-32 after three quarters. Brianna Bower rebounded Cesarz’s missed free throw and drove the length of the court, but missed the go-ahead layup. Cesarz notched a game-high 19 points.
On Tuesday, the DDHS boys basketball team notched its first win of the season, 46-44, at Whitewater. Justin Fowlkes scored 21 in his first game since a knee injured suffered in the WIAA Division 3 football semifinal game. The Comets had an 11-7 scoring edge in the fourth quarter to eek out the team’s first victory.
The DDHS wrestling team continues to be a force to be reckoned with, dismantling Westosha Central, 58-12, in a Southern Lakes Conference dual in the Delavan-Darien Dome. Westosha scored a pin and two early decisions, but DDHS dominated otherwise. The Comets received pins from Cody Chelminak (112), Zach Lazzeroni (125), Jeff Myers (130), Kiefer Bennett (145), Diego Avila (160)Marcus Hudson (171) and Reed Wuttke (215). Lucas Dittner (135), Martin Figueroa (140) and David Figueroa (189) scored decisions, and Kyndle Bennett (152) won by forfeit.
Lastly, the DDHS swim team outlasted Burlington for a six-point win in the DDHS pool Tuesday night. The Comets won 81-75 to move to 2-0 in Southern Lakes Conference dual meets this season
Senior captain Dylan Allen had his first meet back from shoulder surgery and contributing to the win by earning points in the 500-free, the 50-free the Medley Relay and the 200-Free Relay, coach Ryan DeBuck said.
Sophomore Nic Bradley won the 500-freestyle and junior Dan Vasquez won the 100-breaststroke and 200-individual medley.
The varsity boys basketball team hosts Waterford Thursday. Freshman and JV games start at 5:30 with varsity starting at 7 p.m. at DDHS.
The girls team hosts Waterford on Friday, same times, same place.
Wrestling hosts a Saturday invite in the DD Dome vs. Janesville Parker, Milton, Pewaukee, Kenosha Tremper and Freeport (H.S.). Matches get underway at 9:30 a.m.
The swim team travels to Fort Atkinson Saturday for a “for fun” relay meet. The event is a fundraiser for a young boy with cancer, DeBuck said. It will be a good chance to have some fun and blow off some steam while competing after the tough first few weeks of heavy training, DeBuck said. Events start there at 10 a.m.
