The four Comet wrestlers who participated at the WIAA Division 2 State Meet from Thursday through Saturday didn’t bring home any state titles, but they can be proud of their individual efforts.
DDHS was represented by senior Jeff Myers and juniors Kiefer Bennett, Kyndle Bennett and Marcus Hudson.
“The boys wrestled well,” Coach Craig Lodahl said. “I’m very proud of them.”
At state, the wrestlers are so competitive and so talented, that you can’t have any mental lapses, Lodahl said.
“The kids are so good at the state tournament that you can’t afford to come out flat or make any mistakes,” Lodahl said. “If you do, you’re going to be ending the state tournament early.”
Myers wrestled in the 130-pound weight class. He took his opponent to overtime in the first round on a somewhat controversial call. Myers was called for stalling with no time left in regulation, forcing the extra time. His opponent scored the first takedown and won 4-2. Myers finished the season with a record of 37-12.
Kiefer Bennett wrestled at 145 pounds and finished in fourth place. He won his first match by a 9-5 decision, then his quarterfinal match with a pin in 3:06. Kiefer fell in the semifinal by a 6-1 decision and battled back in the consolation semifinal with a dominating 5-0 decision. Kiefer’s state run came to an end after being pinned in 4:52 in the match for third. Kiefer finished his junior year 41-11.
Twin brother Kyndle Bennett wrestled at 152 pounds. He had a tough draw state, losing a 6-1 decision in the quarterfinal, then dropping 4-2 in the consolation round. Kyndle, who was a sectional champ, ended his season at 40-6.
Lastly, Marcus Hudson, a 171-pounder, finished in fourth place for the Comets. Hudson got a first-round win, an 8-4 decision. He was then defeated 11-5 in the quarterfinals but bounced back to win a 5-3 decision in the consolation bracket’s first round, then won a 7-5 decision in the consolation semifinals. Hudson lost a heart-breaker, 3-2, in the match for third. Hudson finished a solid junior campaign with a record of 46-6.
