Phoenix students participate in Battle of the Books

Throughout the year, Phoenix Middle School students have been participating in the statewide “Battle of the Books.”

The statewide Battle of the Books program is designed to promote a love of reading among students. It encourages students to read a variety of books and remember information about the plots, characters, and settings of the books. Every question asked in a battle is answered by the title and author of the book and takes the form of: Name the book in which a horse and a boy are stranded on an island. It is a fun, academic-based competition that has been very successful in school district’s throughout the state in encouraging students to read.

A Battle of the Books team may consist of two to four members and each individual school decides on how to create their team. A team may consist of four students from one grade level or perhaps a combination of grade levels.

The Battle consists of 25 questions that are answered by providing the title and author of the book. Ten points are awarded for the correct title and five points for the correct author. Titles and authors must be written in full as listed on the Battle website when answering the test questions in February. No points will be given for a partial title or if only the last name of the author is listed.

Participating schools can send one team on to a state competition.

Phoenix Middle School had six teams competing in the battle this year. The school had four different reading battles in order to decide the team we sent to the State Competition. During the week of February 20th the team of Laura Farley, Ricky Karbash, Desiree Miller and Kali Anditon will meet in the computer lab and take a statewide test that will be used to compete with other schools and students from throughout Wisconsin.
