Two of the four individual Delavan-Darien High School wrestlers found themselves on the medal podium at the end of this past weekend’s WIAA Division 2 Individual State Wrestling Tournament.
Senior Marcus Hudson finished fourth at 182 pounds, and classmate Kiefer Bennett took fifth at 145 pounds.
Classmates Kyndle Bennet (152) and Austin Schwarz (106) did not place.
“To place at the state tournament is a great accomplishment,” coach Craig Lodahl said. “To even make it to the state tournament is a difficult task. It means you’re one of the top 12 kids in the state in your weight class out of all the Division 2 schools in the state.”
Lodahl said his Comet wrestlers had hoped to do better.
Hudson had been undefeated coming into the state tournament. He won his first match with an 11-3 major decision, then lost a close decision 3-2 to the eventual state champion. In the wrestle-back bracket, Hudson scored a 9-2 decision to get into the match for third, but lost that one after being pinned at 3:38.
Kiefer Bennett won his first two matches via pins, lost his next two by decision, but bounced back to win the match for fifth, pinning his opponent in 2:56.
Schwarz lost his first match and did not advance.
Kyndle Bennett scored a 6-3 win in his first match, then dropped his next two, keeping him out of the medal rounds.
“I’m very proud of the boys for their accomplishments, and the nice thing is they still get another chance to win what might be their last match ever on Saturday afternoon as the team wrestles in the state semi-finals against returning state champions Ellsworth,” Lodahl said.
