Lockdown at Darien Elementary: All students/staff safe

Darien PDAbout 12:20 p.m. today (Friday, May 4), Darien Elementary School went into a lock-down procedure for a reports of gun shots fired  near the school.

A Village of  Darien Police Officer, who was at the school at the time of the report, ordered all staff and students to the gymnasium for this lock-down. All exterior doors were secured and no one was allowed into or out of the building until the all-clear notice was given by police shortly before 1 p.m.

Officers from four area police departments responded to the report, including the Village of Darien, City of Delavan, Village of Walworth and Walworth County Sheriff’s Department.

Police determined that a male subject at a residence on the 100 block of south Walworth Street had been target-practicing with a BB gun outside. No shots were directed at the school at any time.

Police have secured the area and all students and staff are safe.

Normal building procedures were followed for the rest of the school day following the all-clear.

Parents/guardians were notified of the incident by phone and email today (Friday, May 4) via the district’s AlertNow mass-notification. Information sheets describing the incident were also sent home with the students.
