DELAVAN — The Delavan-Darien High School and Badger High School jazz programs will combine forces to sponsor and take part in a special jazz concert featuring the Northern Illinois University Jazz Ensemble with guest artist Dennis Mackrel, a drummer and current leader of the Count Basie Big Orchestra.
The concert will take place in the Auditorium at Badger High School at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17.
Throughout the day leading up to the concert, students in the DDHS Jazz Ensemble and Badger Jazz Ensemble will have the opportunity to have rehearsal time with Professor Ron Carter, Director of Jazz Studies at NIU; sectional time with the NIU collegiate musicians; and clinic time with the amazingly talented and inspiring Dennis Mackrel.
At 7 p.m., the DDHS Jazz Ensemble will take the stage first, followed by Badger Jazz Ensemble, with the NIU Jazz Ensemble with Dennis Mackrel rounding out the evening’s performances.
“Creating a situation where our students have the chance to work with the likes of Ron Carter and Dennis Mackrel for a full day is a dream come true,” said Jim Gornick, DDHS director of bands and jazz studies. “These gentlemen are true masters in the field of jazz and jazz education. I can’t wait to see how much our students grow and learn from this amazing opportunity. Plus, what a great opportunity for members of our community and region to come out and both support our kids while experiencing some amazing jazz.”
Tickets for the concert cost $6 and will be available at the Delavan-Darien High School Main Office, directly from participating students and band directors Jim Gornick (DDHS) and Greg Bunge (Badger).
