DELAVAN — The Delavan-Darien High School boy’s basketball team competed against rivals from Elkhorn Area High School in the Second Annual Coaches vs. Cancer fundraising competition.
Thanks to the generosity of the fans, parents, players, booster clubs and community, the programs together raised $1,313.44 this year and a total of $6,717.44 over the course of the last two years. (Note: Girls basketball teams from both schools participated in the inaugural year of the fundraising competition.)
The participating coaches were Elkhorn’s John Handel and Delavan-Darien’s Bob Beighton.
Coaches from both schools are looking forward to continuing this new chapter in the Delavan vs. Elkhorn rivalry. The battle against cancer will become new tradition in the storied history of the Highway 11 Showdown.
The fundraisers brought another facet to the storied rivalry.
Over this basketball season, fans of both schools were asked support the rivalry and curing cancer with their wallets. The fundraising went on at halftime of home basketball games for each school.
An average of 83 Wisconsinites are diagnosed with cancer each day, Beighton learned. So, an extra 83 seconds was added to each halftime, allowing students and players the chance to collect donations from fans attending the games with a “pass the bucket” collection throughout the stands.
Proceeds from the collections will go to local cancer clinics and the Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer (MACC) Fund.
