On March 6, leading student musicians from the Delavan-Darien High School Symphonic Winds and String Orchestra participated in the Southern Lakes Honors program.
Students from Lake Geneva Badger, Burlington, Delavan-Darien, Elkhorn, Union Grove, Waterford, Wilmont and Westosha Central band, orchestra and choir programs began their day at 8 a.m. at the Badger High School in Lake Geneva.
They attended several hours of rehearsals and sectionals, lead by guest clinicians, performed informally for each other, then presented an evening concert.
“It was a long day of hard work, skill development, stamina building and team effort,” said DDHS Orchestra Director Jennifer Bayerl. “We are proud to say that DDHS students Therese Hartogh, Noah Quintero and Rachel Riggs were featured soloists in their repertoire.”
The Southern Lakes Honors Band guest clinician was Professor Timothy Yontz from Wheaton College in Illinois. The SLH Orchestra clinician was UW-Milwaukee’s new Symphony Orchestra Conductor Jum Kim.
Bayerl and DDHS Director of Bands Jim Gornick both said they are proud of the achievements made by the students after just one day of rehearsal.
“We believe that the students grew as musicians and learners through this intensive experience,” Gornick said. “And, along with the many families and friends in attendance, we enjoyed the wonderful concert that completed the day.”
