Delavan-Darien High School juniors Angel Gonzalez and Alani Villegas were named DDHS Students of the Month for the month of April.
Angel was nominated by DDHS science teacher Shelly Sullivan, who wrote:
“Angel has impressed me in geology this month for two reasons: First, Angel is a leader in the classroom. Other students have been coming to Angel for help and he has been selfless in giving up his time. Specifically, Angel’s Spanish speaking skills have allowed him to help other students who are learning English and geology at the same time. He also volunteers to work with any student, especially when they don’t have a partner. Second, Angel has shown determination and persistence as he works to learn about rocks and minerals. Angel is very self-aware of his own knowledge and continues to work, ask questions and redo assignments until he feels he fully understands the concepts.”
Chinese language teacher Xin Hill nominated Villegas. Hill wrote of the junior:
“Alani has been doing great in my Chinese 1 class that is offered by Gateway Technical College. She is a critical thinker, creative and always acts responsible and respects herself as well as others. Alani has been a diligent participant both in class and through assigned activities. At the midterm exam she received an A+, for both written and oral exam, which is the highest score among all her classmates. She is not only studying hard but also sharing her experiences with her peers. I feel very lucky to have her as my student. She inspires me to teach!”
Freshman Ian Showalter was a nominee for the April award. His letter of support came from math teacher Mary Beth Waychoff, who wrote:
“I am happy to nominate Ian for student of the month because of his consistent self-advocacy outside of the classroom. He stops in everyday after school to check for understanding when needed. His skills have been improving throughout the year because he masters the skills of each lesson and concept learned and therefore is ready to learn the upcoming sections. His consistent work habits and self-advocacy are great characteristics and are reasons for his success!”
Winners of the Student of the Month awards receive a letter home, their picture and write up displayed in the case by the auditorium and on the DDHS website. Winners also receive a Comet Code T-shirt!! Nominees will also receive a letter home and a Comet Code T-shirt!
