On a day when all Major League Baseball players wore No. 42 in honor of the late, great Jackie Robinson (the first African-American to play in the Major Leagues), students at Turtle Creek Elementary School were having a baseball celebration of their own.
Students were delighted to have a day that combined reading and America’s past time. Delavan-Darien High School baseball players, members of the Beloit Snappers Minor League team and Wisconsin-based author Marla McKenna all came in to read with students on this special day. And, of course, all of the books they read were about baseball!
McKenna is author of the book “Mom’s Big Catch,” which is about a girl who dreams of catching a game ball hit by a player on her favorite team. After the school day, she spoke with Turtle Creek families at a special parent’s night about the importance of reading!
At the parent’s night, attendees were treated to traditional baseball fare of hot dogs and chips. There were also raffle prizes donated from the Coaches Locker in Delavan, the Beloit Snappers baseball team, the DDHS baseball players and McKenna’s new book!
What a great event for all!
