Eighth-grade author takes home a top prize

Carly Hopkins

Carly Hopkins

The staff at Phoenix Middle School know that eighth grader Carly Hopkins is an extremely talented and gifted writer.

Throughout the year, she has been working during Academy Time on competition writing. She has almost a full novel done and has penned numerous short stories and poems.

One of the larger contests that she has entered is the Willy Con Poetry Contest, which is run by Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb. It is a poetry contest where middle school students from around the world write in and submit science fiction or fantasy poetry.

We’re proud to boast that Hopkins has won a first place award for poetry in that contest. She has been published online and her work will be featured on the site for a year. She also won a monetary gift.

In addition to those honors, she also won a fourth place award for another poem in one of the contest’s other categories.

She is extremely proud of herself and so are all the staff at Phoenix Middle School.

Way to go, Carly!

About WillyCon

WillyCon is sponsored by the Wayne State College (WSC) Science Fiction and Fantasy Club and is located on the WSC campus. WillyCon is typically held during the month of April, depending on holidays and the academic calendar. A variety of campus organizations are involved with the convention and we strive for a unique quality of fun and education. Some of our programs are presented by WSC science educators, and others by students and/or selected guests dealing with fantasy, science fiction, and gaming topics. We also have a short-story contest, an art show and auction, a masquerade show, gaming, movies, dealer’s room, etc. Fun and educational!

Wayne State College is located in the town of Wayne, in northeast Nebraska. Although WillyCon is held on a college campus, it is open to everyone.
