More than 80 Delavan-Darien students, parents, staff and alumni joined forces on “Team Lodahl” to help raise funds for cancer research by taking on the Cancer Assault Challenge at Lutherdale this past weekend (May 18).

DDHS Associate Principal/Athletics Director Craig Lodahl is a cancer survivor and formed the team. He also asked a few local businesses if they were interested in supporting the team and had T-shirts made for the members to wear for the race.

Together, the team and local supporters were able to raise about $3,000 to support fighting cancer and cancer research.

Along with money, students in DDHS woods and art classes helped to rebuild a piece of furniture with a Jimmy Buffet theme on it that was sold at the event’s silent auction

“It was a great day for the race and everyone the competed had a blast,” Lodahl said. “It was just another example of the great people we have within our school and community that showed their support by either competing or donating to a great cause.”

The race was a 5K obstacle-course run for the extreme and a 1-mile walk/run for the “coach potato” division.

Both divisions had their own obstacles to deal with that included things such as crawling through mud pits, sand pits, a swim in the lake (which was still cold, by the way), flipping tractor tires, carrying tires, and climbing into and out of dumpsters filled with sand.

“It was great to see the competitiveness in our athletes as well as the teamwork, helping and cheering on their team members,” Lodahl said.

A second Cancer Assault Challenge is already in the planning stages for next year. DDHS business ed students have been invited to be a part of the planning by doing some of the behind-the-scenes work that goes into coordinating such an event.

“This is a great opportunity to again bridge the gap between school and our school motto, ‘learning for the real world,'” Lodahl said.
