The artwork (above) of Phoenix Middle School soon-to-be eighth grader Rachel DeBow will soon grace the cover of a Walworth County Fair harness racing event program.

DeBow won a contest sponsored by the Wisconsin Harness Horse Association. The contest was open to all K-12 students in Walworth County. DeBow and the other two winners will receive a $25 prize, a T-shirt featuring their art, family photographs from the winner’s circle, have their art displayed at the Blacksmith’s Shop on the fairgrounds and the chance to meet and greet some of the racers. There were three winners from Walworth County contestants. Each will be featured on a daily race program.

Here’s what DeBow had to say about her artistc experiences at Phoenix Middle School with art teacher Hugh Petersen:

How has Mr. Petersen helped you develop as an artist? “He helped me discover new kinds of art and has entered me in a lot of art competitions.”

What do you like best about how he teaches art? “He doesn’t tell us exactly what draw, he lets us choose.”

What was your favorite art project in Mr. Petersen’s class? “Probably when he entered me in the ‘Animals of Wisconsin’ competition and I painted a ground squirrel.”

Is there anything else about his class you like? “He’s just a nice teacher and he showed me that he thought I had potential.”

Do you have any special plans for the $25 you won? “Probably put it in my bank account.”
