Sometimes learning a lesson at school can save lives. That’s the hope of volunteer firefighters who bring the Walworth County Smokehouse to Delavan-Darien elementary schools each year.
The Smokehouse recently made a stop at Wileman Elementary, and it will visit Darien and Turtle Creek elementary schools the week of October 14-18.
Area firefighters who work with the smokehouse and volunteer at nearby departments, help teach elementary students who pass through it about staying safe if there is a fire in their homes or at school.
Fire safety is one of the most important things to teach kids at a young age. Firefighters showed the students how quickly fire can spread, how smoke rises, that lighters and matches are dangerous and not toys, how to escape from a building if there is a fire, and how to dial 911 and report an emergency.
Students were also shown some of the equipment firefighters use, and how firefighters would look in their gear if there was a fire.
