DELAVAN — The Delavan-Darien School District will hold public information sessions about new standards-based report cards that are being introduced at the district’s three elementary schools this year.
The consecutive sessions are scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 5, at the School Administration Center (324 Beloit St., Delavan) at the following times:
- 6:30-7 p.m.
- 7-7:30 p.m.
- 7:30-8 p.m.
Parents and community members are invited and encouraged to attend theses information sessions on the new standards-based elementary report cards. District staff members will explain the changes to the report cards, help parents understand how to read the new report cards, and explain whey making these changes was important to the successful education of students in the district.
Standards describe what a student should know and be able to do at each grade level in all subjects, and this new report card is designed to give parents more and better information about how their children are progressing.
On the report card, parents will learn whether or not their child is exceptional — meaning that the child has exceeded the standards; proficient — meaning that the child has met grade-level standards; progressing — meaning that the child is approaching the standards; or beginning — meaning that the child has a minimal understanding of the standards. The report card will also provide information on student work habits and leadership skills.
This new report card will ensure that there is more consistency of expectations from teacher to teacher. It will also help teachers and students focus on the standards from the very beginning of the year, giving students a chance to get help sooner if they are not making adequate progress. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, parents will learn exactly how their students are doing based on the standards — they’ll learn which big ideas and concepts their children have learned and what they need to work on to ensure they are ready for the next grade level.
