DDHS helps support grieving family

Students, staff and alumni of Delavan-Darien High School recently held a fundraiser for the Ortiz family of Sharon.

On Nov. 30, Alvino Ortiz and two of his daughters, Talia Enciso, 18, and Brittney, 7, were killed in a traffic accident on Highway 14 east of Janesville. Maria Ortiz, 14, was seriously injured in the crash.

DDHS Class of 2012 alumni Stephanie Murillo organized a cupcake fundraiser for the family. By selling the cupcakes for $2 each during school lunch hours, and at a home basketball game Friday, Dec. 6, the school raised close to $1,200 for the family.

Students who supported the fundraiser also signed giant posters to show their support for the family, which has family ties to the Delavan-Darien School District.

Proceeds will go directly to Maria Ortiz and her mother Melchora, Murillo said.
