On Monday, February 17, fourth and fifth grade students from Darien, Wileman and Turtle Creek elementary schools gathered at Star Center School outside of Lake Geneva to compete in the Regional Math 24 competition. They were joined by students from Burlington, East Troy, Jefferson and Lake Geneva school districts.
Math 24 is a game that requires quick mental math skills. Four numbers are presented on a card and the contestants must add, subtract, multiply or divide to make the four numbers equal 24. Students completed four rounds of competition to select the top six students from each grade level.
Fourth grade students Esther Cano, Ali Hutchison, Adante Raby and Marissa Torres-Raby represented Turtle Creek, while Kendra Barkas and Destiny Czarneck represented Darien.
Fifth grade students Gwen Acheson, Hailey Flores, Allison Rosencrans, Francheska Sandoval and Breanna Yartey represented Turtle Creek, while Naitaly Napadano represented Wileman.
Marissa Torres-Raby was the highest scoring 4th grade student from our district and took home a blue ribbon.
Hailey Flores and Francheska Sandoval earned high placings, while Allison Rosencrans and Gwen Acheson earned 6th and 5th place trophies, respectively.
Breanna Yartey earned top honors overall for the 5th grade and took home the first place trophy. Yartey also took home the blue ribbon for top scoring student for our district.
The 4th grade students were coached by Mrs. Olson, Ms. Rae, and Mrs. Michelle Turner. Turner stated that she is very proud of the effort and commitment each student showed in preparing for the tournament, as well as the good sportsmanship showed during competition.
The 5th graders were coached by Mr. Kunzie, Ms. Battist, Mrs. Bauer, Mrs. Brellenthin, and Mr. Fouts. Fouts stated that the girls worked very hard every day to prepare for the tournament even though they had many other commitments including practice for Opera For the Young, studying for Battle of the Books, and practicing band and orchestra instruments. Both 4th and 5th grade teams were supported by Ms. Anne Landis and Mrs. Renee Yartey.
Congratulations to all of our math competitors! We are very proud of you!
