The gleam of the Phoenix Middle School gymnasium was a bit brighter this year thanks to the Justin J. Watt Foundation.
Earlier this school year, the foundation funded new basketball backboards for the gym with a $6,300 donation.
“The Justin J. Watt Foundation is providing this funding as a means of support for your extra curricular and athletic activities that give children the opportunity to learn the basic character traits of accountability, teamwork, leadership, work ethic and perseverance while in a safe and supervised environment with their peers,” an award letter from the foundation reads.
J.J. Watt is a Wisconsin native who played collegiate football at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and plays football professionally for the Houston Texans.
The foundation’s mission is to provide after-school opportunities for children in the community to become involved in athletics.
The new hoops were used this year in physical education classes, by the school’s boys and girls basketball teams, by Phoenix students in the Boys & Girls Club of Walworth County, and by many others.
