Nine Phoenix Middle School seventh graders will be attending Camp Badger on the UW-Madison campus this summer to learn more about math, science and engineering.
Attending this one-week residential program for Wisconsin and Minnesota teens will be: Tori Rhone, Lizzie Sirkman, Sydney Anderson, Montserrat Zuniga, Litzy Barajas-Serna, Emily Graham, Melissa Hernandez, Jordan Ensminger, and Maelynn Schnurr.
As campers, students explore the many types of engineering fields and see how they can lead to great careers. Students live in a dorm and experience life on a college campus.
The University of Wisconsin–Madison College of Engineering founded Camp Badger Exploring Engineering in 1998. The experience has organizers believing that the best way to help young people understand engineering is through a combination of field trips, job site visits, hands-on activities, and small group discussions. Each day, campers will have the opportunity to speak with engineering students and professionals about their experiences.
The Geneva Lake Branch of The American Association of University Women (AAUW) scholarship program honored three of our students with scholarships to attend Camp Badger this year. Attending the camp on a scholarship will be Rhone, Sirkman and Anderson.
The AAUW awarded just ten scholarships this year, and 30 percent of them went to our local Delavan-Darien students.
“Immense appreciation goes out to the AAUW for offering these scholarships so that our young women may have this exciting experience,” Phoenix Middle School science teacher Tammy Fumall said. “Also, thank you to the parents of all of these young ladies for their time and support in completing the application process. Without your help, guidance, and encouragement this opportunity would not have been possible.”
The students will participate in camps that are convenient for their summer schedules. There are five one-week camp opportunities in June and July on the UW-Madison campus.
