The DDHS soccer team will be getting a big trophy on Saturday. The questions now are just how big will it be, and which trophy case will it be in?

On the line for the team is a state championship as they prepare for a noon game against Mount Horeb. The Comets cruised to a 6-2 victory in the Division 3 State Semifinal game against Rice Lake Thursday night, Oct. 30. (Watch it here.)

Saturday’s game will be broadcast by Fox Sports Wisconsin and played at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee.

There are four state runners up trophies in one case near the DDHS East Gym. The Comets finished second in 1994, 1996, 1998 and 2005. The only state championship trophy is in the state champions display case across the hall in the commons.

Surely the Comets have a chance to add to the Champions case, but they’ll have to get through a tough Mount Horeb team that hasn’t allowed a goal in the playoffs.

Helping the Comets to victory the Athlete of the Week, sophomore Tigrio Huerta. Huerta had a goal and two assists and won this past week’s online voting in a landslide, receiving 2,265 of the 5,245 votes, outpacing the second-place finisher by more than 1,000 votes.

Also scoring in the win were Juan Rocha (two goals), Luis Villegas (two goals) and Christian Gomez.

The Comets advanced to the State tourney by winning the toughest quadrant in the entire Division 3 bracket. After handedly beating East Troy 10-0 in the opening round, the Comets had to get through the top three ranked teams in the state, according to the coaches poll— St. Anthony (4-1), Catholic Memorial (4-3) and Grafton (6-2).

Mount Horeb was a No. 1 seed in its bracket and advanced to state by blanking Dodgeville/Mineral Point (9-0), PLatteville/Lancaster (3-0) and Evansville (7-6 in a shootout). Mount Horeb beat Luxemburg-Casco 1-0 in the state semifinal game after the Comets’ victory.
