Congratulations to Delavan-Darien High School senior Alonzo Ortiz on earning the Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship – a full, four-year housing and tuition college scholarship awarded to golf caddies from the Western Golf Association Evans Scholars Foundation.

Evans Scholars are chosen based on a strong caddie record, excellent academics, demonstrated financial need and outstanding character. The scholarship is valued at more than $80,000 over four years.

Below is a news story about Ortiz and his accomplishment:

GOLF, IL – As a first-generation American, Alonzo Ortiz saw a college education as an opportunity to provide a positive example for his younger sister and to build a better life for himself and his family.

His parents, both born in Mexico City, did their best to make ends meet, but finding money for college was out of the question.

Thankfully, Alonzo’s summer job as a caddie at Big Foot Country Club helped ease the burden on his family and will allow Alonzo to pursue his dream of being a pharmacist.

Alonzo was among 10 caddies from Wisconsin who recently were awarded the Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship – a full, four-year housing and tuition college scholarship awarded to golf caddies – following a Dec. 18 selection meeting at Maple Bluff Country Club in Madison. All 10 will begin college as Evans Scholars this fall.

“My parents came to this country to give my sister and me a better life,” said Alonzo, a Delavan-Darien High School senior who will study pre-pharmacy/chemistry at the University of Wisconsin. “Thanks to the Evans Scholarship, that dream my parents had for me and the goals I’ve set for myself are now within reach.”

The Wisconsin selection meeting was the fifth of more than a dozen meetings that the Evans Scholars Foundation will hold across the country through March, with more scholarships to be awarded.

“Based on their excellence in the classroom and their service to their schools and communities, these young men and women have earned this life-changing opportunity,” said John Kaczkowski, President and CEO of the WGA. “We welcome them to the Evans Scholars family.”

Evans Scholars are chosen based on a strong caddie record, excellent academics, demonstrated financial need and outstanding character. The scholarship is valued at more than $80,000 over four years.

Selected students will attend a university where the Foundation owns and operates an Evans Scholarship House, including the University of Wisconsin in Madison and Marquette University in Milwaukee.

“Supporters of the Evans Scholars Foundation across the state of Wisconsin should be proud of these dynamic young people for the determination they demonstrated in pursuit of the Evans Scholarship,” said John Maloney, the state’s lead WGA Director. “We are confident these young men and women will leave lasting impacts on their Scholarship Houses and their campus communities.”

Currently, 870 caddies are enrolled in colleges across the nation as Evans Scholars. More than 10,000 caddies, including 946 from Wisconsin, have graduated as Evans Scholars since the program was founded in 1930 by the WGA and famed Chicago amateur golfer Charles “Chick” Evans Jr.

Scholarship funds come mostly from contributions by 26,000 golfers across the country, who are members of the Evans Scholars Par Club. Evans Scholars Alumni donate more than $8 million annually, and all proceeds from the BMW Championship – the third of four PGA TOUR FedExCup Playoff events – are donated to the Evans Scholars Foundation.
