Comets’ bench got a little deeper with Shaffer

After four years of managing the DDHS girls basketball team, senior April Shaffer will get her chance to don a Comets jersey and get some playing minutes in a regular-season game.

She’ll be in the lineup at some point on Senior Night, this Friday, in the regular season’s final home game vs. Burlington.

Varsity coach Hank Johnson said it was the right thing to do for someone so dedicated to not only the team she manages, but also the school she wholeheartedly supports.

“When I made the announcement on Monday, our team broke it down and gave a cheer for April,” Johnson said. “They’re all very excited about the opportunity. April is thrilled.”

Shaffer is a very involved student, said her life skills teacher Carri Brandt. She is a drummer in the DDHS marching and concert bands, plays tennis for the girls squad, managed the boys tennis team and is in the yearbook club.

Johnson said he’s looking for Shaffer to not just take up a space on the floor, but to contribute to what is hopefully a Comets’ win over Burlington Friday night.

“April knows basketball. She understands it,” Johnson said. “From her seat on the bench, she’s able to spot things on the floor that the girls should be doing and she’ll point it out to them. But she’s also very positive in whatever she does. She truly cares about the team and this program. DDHS means a lot to her and she means a lot to us. She is a very special young lady and I can’t wait for Friday night.”

Tip-off for the game is at 7 p.m. in the DDHS East Gym. Come on out and support April and the Comets!

April is a joy to have here at DDHS! Her determination to improve her musical abilities is infectious, and I greatly enjoy working with her! Kudos to Hank for recognizing April’s contributions and giving her this opportunity! – Band Director Nick Stark

April is amazing.  I love watching her in band.  She is so focused and attentive.  When conducting the symphony I found her to be a model of how a musician should participate in a rehearsal. Every student should put forth that kind of effort and engage in everything they do here.  What a thrill to have her on the court this Friday!  – Orchestra Director Jennifer Bayerl

April is awesome. She makes me smile everyday. I’m so happy I know this bright energetic young lady! –DDHS Attendance Secretary Chellie Pelnar

April is a precious young lady. She is involved in her school and always has a smile. A true COMET in my book. How awesome, Hank, and what a special thing for you do do. I can’t wait till FRIDAY! – IT Assistant Carol Dillner
