Children who will be five years of age on or before September 1, 2015, are eligible for the full day Kindergarten program, which includes the optional Dual Language Education Program. By law, all children must complete a 5-year-old kindergarten program to enroll in first grade.
Preschool, or 4-year-old kindergarten, is for those students who will be four years of age on or before September 1, 2015, are eligible to attend one of our four-year-old programs:
- A half-day, every day (morning or afternoon) Dual Language Education Program at Turtle Creek Elementary School.
- A half-day, every day (morning or afternoon) monolingual program in a regular classroom setting.
The Dual Language Education Program in preschool and kindergarten is open to all students no matter their address, heritage or primary language. Transportation is provided to in-district students living in the Darien or Wileman elementary school attendance areas. Students in the preschool dual language program receive 90 percent of their instruction in Spanish and 10 percent in English. By kindergarten, the ratio reduces to 80 percent Spanish and 20 percent English. The trend continues through third grade when it is a 50/50 mix of the two languages. It stays at that mix through high school. The classrooms are made up primarily of a mixture of native English speakers and native Spanish speakers.
The monolingual classrooms teach in English only. Students who are non-native English speakers receive additional assistance from certified English Language Learner teachers.
