Pentair grant supports Call A Comet

Call-A-CometA $1,500 grant from the Pentair Delavan Foundation will help sustain the Delavan-Darien High School Call A Comet program.

Call A Comet is a jobs program for students with special educational needs who are age 18-21 and are still entitled to educational services through the school.

The program is run as a business and students in it are employees of the district. They work to provide services to community members, such as car washing, home cleaning, light yard work, dog walking and more.

The program is intended to be self-sustaining, with student wages being paid from the income received from charging clients for the work the students do.

The Pentair Delavan Foundation grant will help Call A Comet with material expenses—such as car washing equipment and a new power-washer—and potentially allow the program to expand to a second crew of student employees.

Call A Comet was launched this school year and has experienced tremendous success, said Carri Brandt, the program’s coordinator and a special education teacher at DDHS.

The student workers have kept busy and their high-quality work has been appreciated by the hundreds of customers they have served thus far, she said.

Call A Comet is also offering gift cards for the holidays this year, which can be used for any of the services the students provide.
