Phoenix Middle School’s second annual all-you-can eat soup extravaganza, “Empty Bowls,” raised more than $3,300 and drew about 340 visitors on Tuesday, March 22.
Proceeds from the Empty Bowls event will benefit Twin Oaks Homeless Shelter, which often provides temporary housing for Delavan-Darien School District students and families.
Students and staff made hundreds of colorful and unique clay bowls. The soup, the “fixin’s” (desserts, milk, bread, etc.) were all donated by staff, area restaurants and other volunteers, including:
Sweet Aroma, Brodie’s Beef, El Nevado, Daddy Maxwell’s, Jo Jo’s Pizza, Piggly Wiggly’s deli, Elizabeth’s Cafe, Lake Lawn Resort, Panera Bread, Brick House, West Wind Diner, Alder Dairy/Dean Foods, Delavan Indoor Soccer, Dousman Transport Company, The Hair Company, Katie Moser Hair Studio 621, Scheurell Insurance, Country Station, and Kathy Llewellyn.
Many others also donated great items for a silent auction, including gift baskets, sports memorabilia, gift certificates and more.
This year, the Delavan-Darien School District has had 110 students without permanent and/or stable shelter at one point or another. Some of them have stayed at Twin Oaks, which provides stays of up to 90 days and assistance in helping families “get back on their feet.”
