Fourth graders from nine elementary schools throughout the area spent a day on the farm with Delavan-Darien High School FFA students.
The FFA members gave the fourth graders a full-out tour of the Kaizer Farm north of Delavan, showing and telling them about pigs, sheep, goats, cows, horses, farm equipment, farm foods, manure, milk and much more.
The annual field trip includes fourth graders from all three elementary schools in the Delavan-Darien School District — Darien, Turtle Creek and Wileman — as well as private schools in the area. It has grown substantially over the years.
Each year, FFA members have the opportunity to show their leadership by working with kids and practicing the delivery of their own farm knowledge. The youngsters get to learn about agriculture, which is one of Wisconsin’s biggest businesses. Even so, some of them have never been to a farm before, so it is a unique — albeit somewhat smelly — experience.
