The Passing of David Thiel

David-ThielSAD NEWS: Longtime DDHS Science Teacher Dave Thiel passed away on Memorial Day, May 30, 2016. He was 68.

Thiel taught at DDHS from 1976 through 2005 and was a substitute teacher for us after that through 2012. He retired to the Three Lakes area.

He graduated with his teaching degree from UW-Eau Claire and served five years in the US Air Force as a radio communications analyst. He was stationed in Italy and his duties gave him top security clearance, according to his resume. His master’s degree was awarded by UW-Whitewater in 1982.

Dave was a distance running coach for DDHS and would frequently be seen running through town with his student athletes on the cross country team.

He served his entire educational career with Delavan-Darien, having been hired on mid school year following his UW-Eau Claire graduation in the winter of 1975. He was active in the school’s gifted and talented programs and helped make the school’s greenhouse a valuable learning asset. In 1989, he was nominated by staff and community members for the Wisconsin Teacher of the Year Award.

He was also active at Christ Church (Episcopal) in Delavan, teaching in that congregation’s youth ministry.

Dave had fought stomach cancer, and cancer was later found in his brain. Services will be on June 18 and the Episcopal Church in Eagle River, Wisconsin. We will communicate any further information as it becomes known.
