Turtle Creek Elementary School celebrated the end of the school year with an ice cream social and book fair, held Friday, June 3.
Staff were able to give student visitors personalized academic materials, tailored for each grade level and student to keep them reading and practicing math skills over the summer.
Materials given out were designed for parents to use throughout the summer, such as math games to develop core skills, and reading recommendations and resources.
The Scholastic Book Fair was also going on in the school’s library. And, summer engagement ideas were made available by our summer school staff, Bookmobile coordinators, Aram Public Library representatives, Delavan Police officers and city Parks & Recreation officials.
Second-best to all that great earning were the free ice cream sundaes served by staff in the school gym, and the school playground being open on a perfect-weather evening.
The busy night also resulted in a donation of more than $1,200 to the Venegas family, who suffered a terrible tragedy May 28 when Carlos Venegas and Maria Flores, the parents of first grader Giselle Venegas, were killed in a traffic accident. Giselle was critically injured and her younger brother, Carlos Jr., age 2, also died. The family was on the way to a wedding in Sharon. A woman in another vehicle also died in the three-vehicle accident, which involved a semi tractor-trailer.
Graciously, the grand prize $275 gift card to Timber Ridge Resort and Water Park was also given back to the Venegas family after an ice cream social patron had won it.
